Jeremiah 5:7 (NIV)
Why should I forgive you?
God does not forgive us because He feels sorry for us. God absolutely loathes and hates depraved humanity. We know this from the way God Almighty destroyed decadent humanity with a flood. There is nothing about fallen man that God likes. God would rather burn us eternally in hellfire than even look at us. When God sees humanity, He sees the scum, trash, and garbage of the universe. God despises humanity like He despises the bubonic plague. Then why would God forgive a fallen man? Only for the sake of the Lord Jesus Christ. God loves us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for us. But let us never mistake His love for sympathy or longing for a fallen man. The only reason God forgives us and chooses to ignore our numerous sins is because of the atonement of Christ on the cross. God would rather burn us forever in His eternal wrath than even talk to us. But every time God contemplates humanity, He sees the atonement blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Passover lamb, on the forehead of the redeemed and is constrained to relent. So, the next time God questions you, "Why should I forgive you?" Remind our heavenly Father because of the Lord Jesus Christ.
