Amos 4:6 (NIV)
I gave you empty stomachs in every city and lack of bread in every town, yet you have not returned to me", declares the Lord.
A common sinner will always have a guilt conscience. He may be able to dodge it for a day or two, but his guilty conscience will also be goading him. Dogmatic Pharisees, on the contrary, are so hardened in their own self-righteousness that they not only think they are flawless but easily look down upon others in their unrelenting condescension. The one hall mark of a true saint is not just repentance but true humility. Not only does a hardened legalist see any need for repentance but would also easily condemn others as being morally inferior. Such are the people who are eternally damned.
