Cup

Matthew 26:39 (NASB)

"My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me."

There is a lot of mainstream garbage theology out there that perverts this verse to mean that Christ dreaded the agony of the cross. Really? A Man Who told the women, "Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for Me, but for your children," was afraid of the cross? This is utter Holy Spiritless humanistic nonsense. No. Christ dreaded momentary separation and alienation from God. He dreaded becoming the worst rapist, murderer, homosexual, pedophile, atheist, adulterer, thief, and scum on the cross. He Who knew no sin became sin on the cross. He Who was always in a perfect love union with the Father and the Holy Ghost for time before time was about to be separated from God. He Who never knew loneliness was about to be isolated. He Who always saw the face of God was about to see nothing but darkness. He Who was always worshipped and adored in the courts of heaven was about to descend temporarily into the pits of hell. He Who was always clothed in majestic power and robes of white was about to be smeared by the filth, trash, and scum of human sin. That burden of sin was unbearable to the One Who never knew sin. If Jesus the Man had not become the worst sinner on the cross and atoned for our sins, you and I would burn eternally in the wrath of a Holy God. The loving Son had to submit to the unspeakable horror of the justice of an unyielding God. Let us never undermine or misunderstand the agony of Gethsemane and insult the Creator of the universe. Amen.
