Luke 2:34 (NASB)

And as a sign to be opposed.

The Lord Jesus Christ was the ultimate sign and wonder from God, Who was destined to be opposed from His birth. Christ was the only child who was destined for a tragic death, as human thinking goes, from birth. When Mary, the mother of the Lord Jesus Christ, was warned that a sword would pierce her soul, it was a profound truth that no mother would want to hear. What mother would expect to see her son condemned and executed as a criminal? None, save Mary. Jesus of Nazareth was the only Child Who was destined to die a painful and premature death, and for no fault or sin of His. The shadow of the cross was hanging on this divine Child even from birth. Jesus was the only Child Who was born to be hated and opposed by all men, including His Apostles who betrayed and abandoned Him.

As we celebrate the birth of our Savior, let us not forget what this God-Child had to go through for us to be redeemed. This Boy born in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago was born into poverty, hatred, and violence, and was destined to die in a way that we pray none of our children would ever face. This Baby would be the cause for many to rise and fall. The Boy born today in Bethlehem is the sign hated by many, but loved by us, the redeemed. This Boy born today will die prematurely at the hands of sinners, but will walk out of the grave on Easter Sunday. So we Christians who are born again on this day with our Master will rise from our graves as well. That, my brothers and sisters, is the real reason why we worship this sign from God on this Christmas day. Merry Christmas.
