Bread

Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

Man does not live on bread alone.

We are obsessed with earning our daily bread. Sun up to sun down, we toil, labor, and sound wheels to earn enough bread for the day. Our lives and our thoughts are consumed with having enough bread now, not starving in the future. After all, what's more important than for a man to feed himself and his family? Wouldn't it be irresponsible not to be busy earning our bread? But then comes along this 5'3" Nazarene who declared that "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." In other words, the Lord Jesus is saying that all our efforts to eat are garbage compared to the glory of feeding on His word. Can we accept such a harsh rebuke? Our response to His chastisement will determine whether we are sons brought into glory or deserters like those 300 who left Him because they could not accept the teaching of having to eat of His flesh and drink of His blood to be saved.
