Honor

Matthew 13:57 (NIV)

Only in his hometown and in his own household is a prophet without honor

One of the first signs of true discipleship is rejection by family and friends and lack of honor in one's community. Growing up the Lord Jesus probably had a lot of friends. He must have been highly respected for His quick wit and intellect (Luke 2:47, Luke 4:22-23). Then how is it possible for that admiration to turn into sudden hate and revulsion (Luke 4:28)? There's something deep within a human soul that despises the sovereignty and holiness of the Almighty God. A man admire pious platitudes, but tell him that he's a sinner and he'll loath you intensely. A true disciple faces a similar situation after conversion. Once greatly loved by his friends, he'll be intensely hated after conversion. If this is happening to you, rejoice that your name is written in the lamb's book of life (Rev 13:8).
